THE CHALLENGE
Costanoa’s primary challenge was differentiating itself from the crowded landscape of early-stage venture capital firms. The firm strives to be the most helpful voice in the room, not the loudest, and that humility often leads to being overlooked.
Costanoa wanted to raise broader awareness of the firm, its partners, and its focused investment sectors. They were seeking a PR partner with a deep understanding of the VC ecosystem and the strategic guidance necessary to elevate Costanoa’s profile, highlight their differentiated approach, and support their portfolio companies in early-stage markets through tailored funding announcement strategies and execution.
THE GOAL
The ultimate goal was to raise brand awareness in the competitive venture capital landscape, where thousands of firms compete for founder attention and trust.
Costanoa set out to stand apart in a crowded venture landscape by building a reputation as the go-to partner for technical founders, especially in AI. With BAM leading PR for portfolio funding announcements, the firm aimed to deepen its presence in core sectors like healthcare AI and national security, grow its credibility among founders and peers, and drive portfolio value through marketing, positioning, and press.
THE STRATEGY
BAM’s initial approach was to focus on the firm ahead of upcoming portfolio company funding announcements, which resulted in securing an interview and thought leadership coverage in Fortune right out of the gate. This was followed by an internal promotion announcement, securing mentions in Axios and Fortune Term Sheet.
During our first 30 days, we met with the main spokesperson to gain a deeper understanding of their personality, interests, and unique perspective on various topics, which enabled us to craft compelling pitches that led to thought leadership coverage in WSJ VC Pro and Pitchbook. We were concurrently running efforts around our first portfolio engagement during this time and secured 20 placements for a Seed announcement.
The media strategy has continued to be split 60% on portfolio companies and 40% around the firm. What’s good for the portfolio is good for the firm, as it elevates the firm’s investment partners while highlighting the startups they are investing in.

THE RESULTS
Since May 2025, BAM has secured 79 placements in total. The success extends beyond securing an exclusive story for a funding announcement, going deeper to secure meaningful placements in key publications where the audience is the customer for the portco. By doing so, it has tremendous potential to positively impact the startup's sales funnel, enabling accelerated growth and increased awareness in highly competitive industries.
