Why BAM Offers a Therapy Stipend (and Why I Actually Use It)

At BAM, we talk a lot about freedom — freedom to think creatively, take risks, fail forward, and grow. It's one of our core values for a reason. But there's another kind of freedom that matters just as much, maybe more: the freedom to take care of yourself without thinking twice about the cost.

Thriving at work starts with being well outside of it. That's why BAM offers a monthly therapy stipend to cover sessions with licensed therapists, whether you're meeting someone in person or logging on from your couch.

Why therapy? Why now?

Let's be clear: therapy shouldn't be reserved for crisis moments. For many of us, it's an ongoing practice (like going to the gym or reading to learn something new). It keeps us grounded, emotionally aware, and resilient (hey, another one of our values; see the pattern?).

I use this benefit regularly, and it's shifted not just how I move through my personal life, but how I show up at work. Having a dedicated space to process big emotions, untangle stress, or simply pause and reflect has helped me bring more clarity, empathy, and steadiness to my role.

As someone with a late/adult ADHD diagnosis, therapy has given me a framework for understanding how my brain actually works and what I need to do my best work. I've learned that I can't power through a full day on one big project without burning out. I need to break up my day. I need movement. So now, I'll pause when I need to, get a workout in, and come back to my desk with fresh energy and focus. When I mentioned this to our CEO Beck, her response was simple: "Freedom to thrive."

That's it. No judgment. No micromanaging. Just support.

Therapy also taught me practical tools I use every day: brain dumping to clear mental clutter before diving into a project, and using timers to stay focused without spiraling into hyperfocus. These aren't more TikTok productivity hacks for me. They're accommodations that help me work with my brain, instead of against it.

In an evolving, high-growth environment like BAM's, that self-awareness is a must.

What this benefit really means.

For us, offering a therapy stipend is a signal: we recognize that you're a whole person first, a professional second. When we invest in mental health, we're investing in stronger teams, clearer communication, and ultimately, better work.

Thriving at BAM doesn't mean being perfect or "always on." It means being supported fully and without apology.

A challenge for other teams.

We didn't just decide to offer a therapy stipend because it sounded good. We asked our team what they actually wanted during our end-of-year retreat, and they voted for it. It was that simple.

So if you're building or rethinking your benefits package, here's my question: When was the last time you asked your team what they'd find valuable? Not what looks good on a careers page or what other companies are doing, but what would genuinely help your people thrive?

And once you have those benefits in place, do you know why you offer them? Can your team articulate it? Benefits without intention are just line items. But benefits with purpose become part of your culture.
